Reconnaissance in Suoi Chinh Archaeological site

Tuesday - 13/11/2018 22:23

The Culture Deparment of Quang Ngai Province conducted a reconnaisance at the archaeological site in Suoi Chinh, Ly Son island late October with the engagement of national archaeologists and culturists.

At least six jar burials were found in a 10 sqm pit. “These were dated back to the first or second century, or about 2,000 years ago,” shared Dr. Doan Ngoc Khoi, Vice Director of Quang Ngai Museum. In addition to remnants of Sa Huynh people, they found abundant ornaments made of stone or shells buried in the surveyed area.

It is said that Sa Huynh people moved to the island around 2,500 years ago from the mainland. Most of them lived around Suoi Chinh and Xom Oc, where fresh water was available.

“There are still a lot of things observed in this reconnaissance in need of clarification,” Khoi said. “We also found a large-size bone but we couldn’t identify what it was. There shall be equipment to test and validate the assumption.”

The test survey would pave the way for the real excavation and then preservation of Sa Huynh Culture artifacts in the near future.
