Monday - 08/10/2018 06:09
On 5 October 2018, the Ly Son Geopark Management Board with support from Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (VIGMR) hosted a conference in Quang Ngai City. The conference aimed to provide basic concepts of UNESCO global geoparks, disclose initial findings of heritage values in the Ly Son Geopark territory as well as touch on the future plan of the aspiring geopark.

The conference was attended by nearly 300 participants from diverse background, including lead thematic specialists in geological, geomorphological, cultural sectors, researchers, policy-makers, travel agents, private enterprises and especially representatives of around 150 communities in the aspiring geopark territory.

Opening the conference, Mr. Dang Ngoc Dung, Vice Chairman of Quang Ngai Provincial People’s Committee and Head of Ly Son Geopark Management Board, stressed the necessity of developing a UNESCO global geopark in Quang Ngai which would add values to community’s products and then contribute to the socio-economic development in a sustainable manner. “The good participation of international and national scientists and especially of community leaders to this workshop is a clear evidence of commitment to building the geopark,” Dung affirmed.

"Building the geopark is absolutely necessary for the province," said Dang Ngoc Dung, Vice Chairman of Quang Ngai PPC

Nguyen Minh Tri, Director of Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, provided a brief overview of the geopark history, up-to-date key activities, main heritage values and activities to be done for the submission of dossier to UNESCO.

Experienced specialist of UNESCO Global Geoparks Council, Dr. Martini, introduced a checklist of critical elements for the aspiring geopark. He then shared that the province was following the right direction, “keeping up good work and it’s feasible to submit the candidature by the end of 2019.”

Dr. Guy Martini, Chair of UNESCO Global Geoparks Council, sharing at the Conference

As a key consultant to the geopark, VIGMR have conducted various investigations and surveys on geology, geomorphology, tectonics and cultural heritages since early 2018. They briefed the participants key findings and analysis results as well as shared good potential for Ly Son Geopark to be a UNESCO global geopark.

In a sideline activity, a small exhibition was made available displaying products of Ly Son Geopark as well as those by Global Geoparks Network members. Also, videos on Ly Son geopark were shown during the workshop.

The workshop is seen as informative, providing basic understanding of UNESCO global geoparks and updating the progress made so far by the Ly Son Geopark working team to the audience. Hope that the information shared in the conference would not only serve the development of dossier to UNESCO but also be useful for the planning toward a more sustainable manner.
