The two-day international workshop on heritage values of the Ly Son – Sa Huynh Geopark was first time organized in Quang Ngai in a bid to raise awareness of local communities on heritages and to share findings of scientists on cultural and geological values of the geopark.

On 18 June 2019, the workshop co-chaired by Quang Ngai Provincial People’s Committee (PPC) and Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO (UNESCO Natcom Vietnam) launched in Quang Ngai City, with technical support of Institute of Archaeology and Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources.

The workshop aimed at raising awareness of local government and communities on UNESCO Global Geoparks, assessing geological and cultural heritages bestowed in the geopark, and discussing and sharing experiences in the management and promotion of heritage values.

“The adequate identification of heritage values is an important step for the province to develop conservation and promotion plans that are in line with reality and international standards. This workshop provides a platform for international and local scientists and experts to help the province identify those values,” appreciated Dang Ngoc Dung, Quang Ngai PPC Vice Chairman.

More than 300 international and national scientists, researchers, central and local policy-makers attended the event. Dung affirmed that the participation of international and national delegates indicated the interest of scientist community to Ly Son – Sa Huynh geopark.
The workshop includes two main pillars on Sa Huynh archaeological culture and geological heritage. It allocated time for other geoparks and local enterprises to share experiences and lessons for geopark management and development. Le Hoai Trung, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chair of UNESCO Natcom Vietnam,  shared “Vietnam so far has 38 UNESCO designations, two of which are UNESCO Global Geopark. This is not only a title but a sustainable development model. This workshop strengthens the application process which is due by the end of this year, and also provides an opportunity for us all to discuss and work out a right way for sustainable development.”
