From 7 to 17 June 2018, UNESCO and GGN are co-organizing the 10th session of the international intensive course on geoparks with a focus on UNESCO Global Geoparks and Geoheritage management. The course is hosted by the University of Aegean and the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest in Lesvos island, Greece, involving 50 delegates from 25 countries around the world.

The course this year aims to discuss the UNESCO Global Geoparks’ contribution on outcomes related to Earth heritage protection, conservation and management. Participants to the course also have opportunities to widen their knowledge and expertise on UNESCO Global Geoparks as a tool for sustainable tourism management and to network with different disciplines and countries.

Aside from in-house lectures where GGN specialists share their understanding and experiences, the participants also take parts in extensive fieldwork to experience themselves of conservation work, museum exhibition and operation and the partnership networking with local stakeholders.

Together with colleagues from Ha Giang and Dak Nong, four members of the Ly Son Geopark Management Board from different background have been sent to this course. During the course, they have opportunities to learn, to share experiences from other UNESCO Global Geoparks as well as aspiring geoparks on various issues. Among those, the application procedures, the management, conservation, sustainable tourism development, local sustainable economic development, communication and partnership are among their particular interests as these would be critical for the development of a potential global geopark in Quang Ngai.

Quang Ngai team also took this opportunity to introduce the Quang Ngai asipring geopark to international colleagues with a specific activity of community education initiative within Ly Son small island Conservation Project which has been delivered by Doan Anh Duong JSC. This initiative sheds an innovative light to the traditional training approaches which has been popular in many areas in Vietnam. The approach is also in farvor by the course participants.

It is planned that in the aftermath of the course, lessons learned will be adopted and applied to the Quang Ngai aspiring geopark, which in turn, brings a better-off to local economic development of the province and local communities in the territory.

Participation to this annual capacity building event, along with other GGN regular activities, is an important criteria for the membership of UNESCO Global Geoparks and GGN.
