Hanoi – On 16 January 2020, Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO (VNCU), under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, hosted a conference to looking back its performance in 2019 and planning for the year of 2020. The conference, chaired by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung, was attended by VNCU Committees, VNCU Technical Committees, UNESCO-listed heritage management bodies and UNESCO Office in Hanoi.

Brief review report by VNCU hightlighed its achievements in the past year, including promoting Vietnam’s presence in various UNESCO mechanisms, successfully obtain UNESCO designations for folklore of ‘hát then’ as Intagible Culture Heritage of Humanity and Hanoi being a member of UNESCO’s Network of Creative Cities. The report also appreciated efforts of relevant agencies in promoting values of UNESCO titles.

In its agenda 2020, in addition to traditional working programs, VNCU sets forth ambitious goals, many of which are globally concerned, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI ethics. This may lead to the establishment of a new VNCU Committee, on top of the current five, named management of social transformation (MOST). VNCU will further exercise Prime Minister’s message “No trading economics at the costs of culture and environment.”

Technical Committees on Vietnam Global Geoparks, Dr. Tran Tan Van, requested the VNCU in 2020 to consider or to appeal higher levels to consider two issues, (i) the establishment of an adequate and capable management body of geoparks, which is best chaired by a vice chairman of provincial people’s committee, and (ii) the generation of income for geoparks in the form of entrance fees.

On a sideline talk with Michael Croft, Head of UNESCO Hanoi Office, Ly Son – Sa Huynh Geopark explored the opportunity to combine geopark and other UNESCO programs, including microplastic waste, which is currently being undertaken by UNESCO in Vietnam. In the case of Ly Son – Sa Huynh Geopark, Michael suggested providing necessary interventions before designation and he opened to pay a field trip to Quang Ngai to further discuss the potential.
