On September 10th 2019, Quang Ngai Provincial People’s Committee hosted a meeting to update on the progress of the Ly Son – Sa Huynh Geopark. The meeting witnessed the participation of all relevant agencies working on the program including representatives of key stakeholders such as the Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism; Department of Home Affairs, Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of Natural Resources and Environment; Border Defences Forces; relevant district leaders; representative of Dung Quat Economic Zone Authority, Pham Van Dong University and Doan Anh Duong Investment Development Company; PMB team and the local media.

The meeting was led by Dang Ngoc Dung – PPC Vice Chairman. In the opening remarks, he highlighted the importance of collaboration among all relevant agencies to work on the project in realizing the Provincial Party’s Resolution, especially given the fact the there are two months left till the submission date to UNESCO.

It was followed by a detailed updates on the progress by Nguyen Minh Tri – Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism. By now, we have identified four routes with around 88 sites within the area of the geopark; following with the process of equipping these sites with required infrastructure for public use. At the moment, Vietnam Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (VIGMR) focused entirely on finalizing the application dossier to be submitted to UNESCO by this November.

Besides updates on preparatory work, there were a few issues and challenges faced by the team, which were brought to the table for open consultation and discussion as they were related to various stakeholders to some extent, including: 1) the consolidation of PMB team; 2) variation in the geopark territory as a few more sites were proposed to be included; 3) the establishment of Information Centers; 4) training and communication activities; 5) equipping site with required infrastructure; 6) networking and partnership with other geoparks for experience exchange. Then came an animated discussion with an active engagement of nearly all participants, addressing certain points within their knowledge and expertise.

After a fruitful discussion, PPC Vice Chairman closed the meeting by declaring some results – action addressing concerned proposed by the Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism. Priority was given to the establishment of the Information Center, training and communication activities that needed to be carried out at provincial and district level first. Dung also emphasized the leading role of the Department of Culture, Sport and Tourism in developing a thorough plan for activities that required the involvement of district authority for a better co-operation. But more importantly, the smooth collaboration among all key members was crucial to the success of this mission.

The meeting was successfully held with positive results as concerns were discussed openly and addressed.  It helped to keep all key members updated on the progress, what we had achieved so far and what still needed to be done and more importantly, united them by giving room for sharing,  and understanding.
