Ly Son – Sa Huynh Geopark engages in Vietnam Geopark Network

During 17 – 18 January 2019, for the first time, representatives of Ly Son – Sa Huynh Geopark availed themselves to several periodical meetings in Hanoi hosted by UNESCO Vietnam National Commission and Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (VIGMR).

The first meeting hosted by UNESCO Vietnam Natcom reviewed the year of 2018 and planned for the year 2019. Despite challenges facing, UNESCO Vietnam has achieved encouraging outcomes. One of those is contributed by Global Geopark Sub-Committee being parts of Global Geopark Network and Asia Pacific Geopark Network. In 2018, the Non Nuoc Cao Bang geopark was formally designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark. In this sense, sustainable development on the basis of heritage conservation in the form of global geoparks is definitely prioritized by UNESCO Vietnam Natcom working agenda.

The year-end meeting organized by UNESCO Vietnam Geopark Sub-Committee looked back the activities of Vietnam geoparks in 2018. Participants to the meeting included representatives and scientists from relevant central ministries, academies and current geoparks in Vietnam. Discussions focused on improving the effectiveness of the Sub-Committee and upholding the role and expertise of the members. Representative of Ly Son – Sa Huynh Geopark, Mr. Nguyen Minh Tri, shared challenges facing the geoparks and called for technical assistance from scientists to ensure sustainable development in the provinces.

Another meeting among geoparks and VIGMR to update the progress and to work the way out for challenges facing the geoparks either during the operation and management of the UNESCO designation or in the development of the application dossier. The meeting organized on a monthly basis with senior UNESCO Global Geopark Consultant, Dr. Guy Martini, and VIGMR aiming to provide support and assistance where necessary to the geoparks in a timely manner.

In this meeting, an action plan has been agreed upon for Ly Son – Sa Huynh Geopark in 2019 focusing on identifying geotour routes with key stopovers, designing communication materials, drafting the conservation strategy and finalizing the dossier to UNESCO by the end of the year. It is considered that 2019 will be a banner year for Ly Son – Sa Huynh Geopark, paving the way for UNESCO designation at the later stage.
