One more geopark candidacy from Vietnam gets greenlighted

On Friday 20th of September the Information Meeting on the International Geosciences and Geoparks Programme (IGGP) took place at the UNESCO Headquarters with great participation from Delegations of the Member States.

In the meeting, several informative presentations were delivered by the panel, with a focus on diversed topics such as: the importance of the IGGP for UNESCO; UNESCO’s contribution to the Society; International Geoscience and Geoparks programme of UNESCO; UNESCO Global Geoparks concept and structure; capacity-building activities of UNESCO Global Geoparks and Geoheritage for Geohazard Resilience. It was then followed by a broad discussion among the Presenters and the delegations from Member States.

Notably, Dr. Guy Martini - Chair of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council, presented the outcomes of the 4th UNESCO Global Geoparks Council meeting held in September in Indonesia. Sixteen out of nineteen applicants were accepted after the evaluation, in which 11 were new applicants of this year and five from the previous years. Among 11 new candidates accepted is named DakNong Geopark from Vietnam. The endorsement of the Council proposals on new applications will be made by the UNESCO Executive Board in April 2020.

Guy also informed that the revalidation this year gave 37 green cards and one red card. Also, request for extension/reduction of less than 10% area of six members were accepted.
