Potential members of Global Geoparks Network

On 21st February, an open session for the public, especially IGCP National Committees, representatives of UNESCO’s Member States and cooperating organizations, took place in Paris. On this occasion, within the framework of the UNESCO Global Geoparks, new applications will be presented.

There are 14 new applications submitted to UNESCO, including one from Vietnam (DakNong Geopark). Two others from Southeast Asia is Belitong (Indonesia) and Bohol (the Philippines). Also from Asia includes two candidates from China and one from Korea.

Apart from 14 new applications, four requesting extension includes Dun Huang and Zhijindong geoparks from China, Haute Provence from France and Troodos from Cyprus.

As of 2018, 140 Geoparks from 38 Member States are currently members of the Global Geoparks Network.

IGCP is a joint programme of UNESCO and the International Union of Geological Sciences. For more than over 40 years in operation, it has supported scientific projects related to the Earth sciences across the world, involving one of the five themes that constitute the Programme: Earth Resources, Global Change, Geohazards, Hydrogeology and Geodynamic. IGCP and UGGp constitute two main pillars of the International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme (IGGP).
