The 6th Asia Pacific Geoparks Network (APGN) Symposium is held in Lombok Geopark, Indonesia from August 31 to September 6 with the main theme of UNESCO Global Geoparks Toward Sustaining Local Communities and Reducing Geohazard Risk. This symposium includes 5 topics 1) Empowering local socio-economic for sustainable development; 2) Engaging Communities, geohazard risk and recovery; 3) Popularizing scientific knowledge for public education; 4) Promoting aspiring global geoparks; and 5) Networking volcanic and karst landscape global geoparks. The topics are discussed across more than 150 oral presentations and 63 poster presentations delivered in the symposium.

The symposium was attended by about 600 delegates, including geologists and APGN participants from 30 countries in the Asia Pacific region. This symposium provided a valuable opportunity to exchange experiences and discuss issues about APGN Geoparks management.

In addition to in-office presentations and discussions, the participants had chances to experience amazing geoheritage, beautiful landscapes and colorful cultural identities of Rinjani Lombok Geopark in three trails.Trail 1 on Rinjani Cultural Landscape introduces the culture forming by the volcanic landscape and Mount Rinjani. Train 2 shows how local ethnic Sasak live harmoniously with nature and build resilience toward geohazards and climate change. Trail 3 leads to Sembalun valley with a trekking path to the highest point in Lesser Sunda (top of Mount Rinjani).

At the closing ceremony, a declaration on Sustaining Local Communities and Reducing Geohazard Risk was released in a bid to further implement the UNESCO Global Geoparks management concepts that aims to sustain local communities and reduce geohazard risks. The declaration has ten commitments, including empowering various geopark stakeholders for sustainable development, developing creative and innovative activities to raise public awareness on geohazard risk reduction, promoting and contributing to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the UN Agenda 2030, targeting all age groups on public education for popularizing scientific knowledge in UNESCO Global Geoparks, promoting geopark sites as sustainable tourism destination, promoting the use of friendly technology and infrastructure to protect the UNESCO Global Geopark geological sites, and so on.

The delegation of Ly Son – Sa Huynh Geopark, led by Mr. Vo Phien, Vice Chairman of Quang Ngai Provincial People’s Committee, has engaged in all the symposium activities, including introducing the geopark in “Emotions in a land of Motions”, attending scientific sessions, sideline discussions, excursions, displaying specific identities in the geofair, etc.
