Eight new UNESCO Global Geoparks

UNESCO’s Executive Board on 17 April approved the designation of eight new sites and the extension of three existing Geoparks, making the total GGN members so far to 147.
Eight new UNESCO Global Geoparks
On 17 April 2019, UNESCO’s Executive Board approved the designation of eight new sites demonstrating the diversity of the planet’s geology as new Geoparks. As reported by UNESCO, eight new members to Global Geoparks Network are from Asia, Europe and South America, which include Kütralkura (Chile), Jiuhuasha and Yimengshan (China), Vis Archipelago (Croatia), Imbabura (Ecuador), Trollfjell (Norway), Colca y Volcanes de Andagua (Peru) and Courel Mountains (Spain).

Also, the Executive Board also approved the extension of three existing Geoparks. All three extended geoparks are from China, namely Funiushan (Henan Province), Sanqingshan (Jiangxi Province) and Taishan (Shandong Province).

With this year’s additions, the number of sites in the Global UNESCO Geoparks Network is brought to 147 in 41 countries.
